I have a friend who wants to have display doors made for his martini glass collection. Currently the collection is on glass shelves inset within a opening in the wall measuring 23" by 85" and about 6 inches deep. See picture below.
We originally agreed on building a frame around the opening and over lay it with an upper and a lower panel and glass door, hinged at the left, tongue and groove joinery, with 3 inch frames, 7/8" thick Pacific Maple that matches the rest of the cabinetry. The inside of the frame would be flush with the outside of the opening so the lower door would 29" wide by 47" tall and the upper door would be 29" wide by 44" tall.
However, that design would leave a substantial part of the middle of the collection blocked out where the rails of the two door meet. If the other rails and the stiles were all 3 inches but the lower rail of the top door and the top rail of the lower door were only 1 1/2 " wide, would that be strong enough to hold the 1/8" glass and not rack? That would look better, but the tenons there could only be about an inch high, less if haunched. If 1/12 is too narrow, could I get away with 2?
If we decide instead to do a single-pane glass door, is 7/8 inch frame still heavy enough especially since I think I'd have to go up to next glass thickness with a pane that big?
