Here's a New York Times article about the new laser Dan Shapiro and Glowforge are developing in Seattle. They call it a 3D laser printer and plan to sell it for $2,000 with friendly, but powerful, cloud-based software.
"To cut costs, Glowforge has found ways to substitute sophisticated software for expensive hardware components. A camera inside the laser cutting chamber and image processing in the cloud will take the place of a part called a motion planner that normally determines how the laser cuts material."
It's my understanding that will be no on-board controller, which sounds pretty cool.
I briefly met Dan in Chicago where I first learned about his new laser and his passion for this project was pretty evident. He was formerly with Google and Microsoft and ran a very successful Kickstarter for a game to teach kids how to code.
There have been a lot of good and affordable disruptive desktop CNCs and 3D printers to hit the market in the last few years, so its nice to see some innovation with lasers.
